Earthquake in Eastvale?

By Mira Doan

Will Eastvale have a massive earthquake? September 26, 2016  the Salton Sea near Bombay Beach, California experienced nearly 200 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 at the most. These earthquakes were in the Brawley Seismic Zone, an earthquake zone connected to the San Andreas Fault. The San Andreas Fault extends roughly 800 miles in California, and Eastvale is 187.4 miles away from it. Sound dangerous? Not to worry, because seismologists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are working on an Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) called ShakeAlert, which allows California to be notified before an earthquake strikes. Seismologists are afraid that since these quakes have been happening on the San Andreas Fault, Eastvale may be one of the next victims in this catastrophe. Fortunately, these earthquakes were a magnitude of 2.0-3.2, gently felt with only minimal damage. So hopefully this is not too serious. However, we must be prepared for the worst. Make sure heavy items are bolted down, have earthquake drills to practice staying safe, and make a plan with your family. It’s hard to know when an earthquake will strike so we must be prepared. Stay safe, Eastvale.
